The incident happened on Wednesday, June 21 just after 12:30 a.m., when firefighters from the Somers Volunteer Fire Department were sent to the Green Briar housing complex on a report of smoke pouring out of a residence.
According to the department, firefighters soon found smoke coming from the garage of a residence. Upon entering the structure, they then found that a refrigerator fire had been largely extinguished, resulting in the lingering smoke.
Crews then remained on the scene for another 80 minutes to clean up the scene and complete their response.
According to the department, the homeowners had been alerted of the blaze by their smoke detectors and had been able to put out the bulk of the flames before crews arrived.
"This is a great example of how important it is to make sure your smoke detectors are properly working!" the department said on social media.
